Lircay Huancavelica Medical Mission

Each year dozens of doctors and volunteers take time from their work/home providing health and medical care to patients who do not have the economic means to see a physician. As one of the poorest regions in Peru, Huancavelica suffers from a lack of accessibility, housed deep in the mountains, resulting in a deficiency of health services. Extensive travel and expense is often required to see a doctor and without access to time or resources, many are forced to go unchecked even when care is urgently needed.

The Huancavelica Medical Mission in Lircay started in 2006, run by Dr. Ralph Kuon in a joint effort between the Peruvian American Medical Society and our supporters: the Ministry of Health of Peru,  the Social Security System from Peru, Buenaventura Mining Company, Direct Relief International, medical schools from both USA and Peru, and several private and charitable organizations from Americares and the Clinton Foundation. Through their support Huancavelica Medical Mission has successfully completed seven annual missions.

The 22-bed hospital in Lircay serves as the home-base for volunteer physicians, surgeons, and dentists. In the past, this mission has partnered with Women for World Health in order to offer the expertise of professionals in Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery. This mission has also included specialists in gastroenterology, ophthalmology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery.
